If you are female, and live to age 50 without heart disease or cancer, you can expect ot live to age 92. This is the good news. The bad news is you are going to live to age 92.

A man who reaches age 65 has a life expectancy of 15-20 years.

So after retirement, one can expect to live another 25 years. To maintain a quality of life, we need a strategy to age successfully. In 1900, average life expectancy was 47 years. In 2000, it was 80 plus years. Today, the life expectancy for a woman who reaches 65 is 25 more years. For a man, it is 15 or more years.

The people over age 85 are the most rapidly increasing segment of our society.

Therefore, what are the Ten Commandments of successful aging.

1. Address risk factors – get regular checkups, fix what is broken. For example, if BP is increased, take medication. Fix obesity – lose weight. Get mammograms, colonoscopies and address cholesterol and high sugar issues.

2. Exercise and Stretching – physical activity is the crux of anti-aging. Exercise is the antidote for heart disease and some cancers. 30 minutes a day is all that is necessary. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS THE CRUX OF ANTI-AGING. Strength training – 1 set of 8-12 repitions every other day. By age 70, 7 % of females can't lift a gallon of milk, and a large % of males can't get off the floor if they fall. Strong people stay young.

Stretching is important. Stretch for 60 seconds; 10 seconds doesn't work.

Eat plant based foods; de-emphasize animal fats (meat).

Drink water.

5. Learn to use the internet.

8. Explore your options – meditation, yoga, tai chi, even getting a manicure or pedicure.

9. Be kind to your skin – avoid sun damage, limit exposure. Malignant melanoma is the most rapidly increasing cancer.

10. Aging is modifiable. Lifestyles make the difference; it is not all genetic. Successful aging is achievable. Mental acquity can improve. And Alzheimer's disease is avoidable.

Substantial health benefits occur with regular physical activity that is aerobic in nature (such as 30-60 minutes of brisk walking, 5 or more days of the week).  Additional health benefits can be gained through greater amounts of physical activity, but even small amounts of activity are healthier than a sedentary lifestyle.  Regular exercise in middle age can help men and women prolong their physical prowess as they grow older. 

A 2005 study by University College London (United Kingdom) found that among 6,400 adults between the ages of 39 and 63, those who could be categorized as "sufficiently active" at the start of the study were more likely to be free of physical limitations nine years later.  "Sufficiently active" study subjects were those men and women who engaged in 2.5 hours of moderate exercise (such as biking and leisurely swimming) or 1 hour of vigorous activity (swimming laps and running, for example) each week.  After nine years of regular aerobic physical activity, sufficiently active adults were less likely to have physical problems that kept them from playing sports, lifting heavy objects, or being able to perform routine activities such as climbing stairs or bathing.  The researchers conclude that "This study shows that regular physical activity appears to be critical to preserving high physical function in relatively fit, healthy, middle-aged men and women."

In the US, 70% of women over the age of 70 cannot lift a gallon of milk!
