What are the best ways to promote good scar healing after cosmetic surgery?

Bare Skin Care - Recently I was asked to answer this question on Quora.

What are the best ways to promote good scar healing after cosmetic surgery?

In an ideal world, this is what I would recommend.

You would not be a smoker; smoking causes a vasoconstriction which will compromise tissue healing.
You would not drink alcohol (or just in moderation); alcohol causes oxidation in the tissues (like rust on a car).
You would be eating a good, nutritious diet, as well as exercising and reducing stress.
Take a good multivitamin, preferably one with anti-oxidants.
For one week prior to surgery, stop aspirin and aspirin-like products, as well as Vitamin E, which can cause bleeding.
Pick a good surgeon, preferably a board-certified plastic surgeon. Get several different consultations, and do not necessarily pick the cheapest one. You get what you pay for. If possible, get a name from a friend who has had the same procedure.
For six weeks prior to surgery, use a good skin care program to prep the skin; this should include products with Retin-A or retinol, hydroquinone, hydrocortisone, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Healthy skin heals better and scars will be improved. (As I said previously, this is in an ideal world, and not always possible). You will not find these ingredients in ONE skin product. All these can be found in the Bare Skin Program for Wrinkles.

After surgery, follow the instructions given. If you do not get instructions in post-op care, you went to the wrong surgeon. If you do not understand something, ask. If you have excessive pain in the scar areas, see the surgeon. Pain in excess of normal can indicate an infection, which will make the scar worse.
Two weeks after surgery, restart the skin care program, and put extra Retin-A on the scars.
Think positive thoughts (thoughts are very powerful), and REDUCE STRESS.

Give the surgeon a break. Remember, the goal of cosmetic surgery is IMPROVEMENT, not perfection. Have realistic expectations.

Bare Skin Care – How To Fix ROUGH Skin

Rough Skin

Rough skin is commonly caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. These dead cells are usually discarded by the body via a natural process called exfoliation, where newer cells push older skin cells to the surface and the uppermost layer of dead cells flake off to reveal the newer cells underneath. (The skin turns over completely every 40-42 days).

However, for some reason exfoliation does not always happen. The resulting build-up of dead skin cells causes the skin surface to appear bumpy and rough in texture.  Invest in a body brush or loofah.  Body brushing is a good way to stimulate blood circulation, which in turn can help to eliminate toxins, and get rid off dead skin cells. Brush the skin in a circular motion, paying particular attention to the elbows, knees, shoulders, back, and thighs. For the best results, brush every day before bathing or showering.

An excellent way to stimulate exfoliation and thus prevent rough skin is to use a combination of Bare Skin Spin Trap Moisture Mask and Bare Skin Enhancer. Together these essentially provide an "in-home microdermabrasion".

Bare Skin Care Retinol Night Cream – Get The Benefits Of Retin-A Without A RX

Bare Skin Retinol Night Cream

This intense Retinol treatment cream is ideal for mature skin with advanced rejuvenation needs. It is a is a therapeutic cream, which also helps the correction of acne as part of an acne repair program. The cream penetrates the dermis and supplies the skin with superb renewal and repair benefits of Vitamin A and Lactic Acid. These two ingredients exfoliate and refine wrinkles and other imperfections, while stimulating youthful memories of the skin’s ability to regenerate itself and defend against future wrinkles and damage. Use in conjunction with Bare Skin Activator to permeate the deeper skin layers, causing exfoliation, tightening to eliminate wrinkles, and anti-inflammatory protection for acne. When cell-turnover is triggered, temporary skin flaking can be the result, which will eventually lead to improved and radiant looking skin texture.

Retinol's benefits are to keep the skin young-looking, supple, smooth and clear of blemishes regardless of the imminent age factors. Retinol’s anti-aging properties come from the fact that it can be easily absorbed on the skin through its active derivative, which is retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is basically Retin A. Then again, people cannot use Retin-A over-the-counter because of its possible side effects. But when retinoic acid is delivered through in the form of retinol, the skin is less likely to react negatively. Retinol is 10-15 times less irritating than Retin-A. That is the reason why retinol has been approved for use even without a prescription. It is effective and safe at the same time, deliverong the skin benefits of Vitamin A derivatives minus the side effects.

Retinol deeply penetrates the skin and reduces the effects of free radicals which are responsible for accelerating skin aging. Free radicals are unstable molecules of oxygen that cause wrinkles by breaking down skin cells. When free radicals are kept in check, naturally, the skin’s aging process is held back. Because Retinol works bellow the surface of the skin, it is a very efficient candidate for removing deep wrinkles and fixing damages that simple moisturizers just can’t do. In other words Retinol works because it is able to go bellow the outer layers of the epidermis to the areas of the skin that contain elastin and collagen. Elastin is a complex protein that makes the skin elastic, but collagen helps maintain rigidity. Regrettably the production of elastin goes down dramatically after puberty and thus it is imperative to keep what fibers we have in good shape by refraining from damaging our skin and promoting repair. To get Retin A a prescription from a dermatologist is required.

Bare Skin Care – Rejuvenate Your Skin

Bare Skin Rejuvenation Serum - This is one of the main anti-aging ingredients in all of the Bare Skin programs. If you are using Bare Skin, you should use this product.

A fantastic serum for skin that needs wrinkle reduction, cell turnover, skin renewal and correction! This serum is a complex synergy of Retinol (Vitamin A) and Glycolic Acid.

Retinol is a skin-renewing vitamin which is essential for tissue growth. Glycolic Acid Polymer further assists cell turnover and strengthens collagen and elastin. The complex synergy of these ingredients contained in this serum, gives you much better results than each ingredient used alone.

This serum triggers a process in the skin that re-selects its epidermal building blocks, and therefore lines and wrinkles will slowly give way to smoother, more elastic and wrinkle resistant skin. The serum is very powerful and as cell turnover starts, some flaking may occur. Go slow with the serum, if your skin is sensitive, and let the skin renewal process take place gradually.

Ingredient List:
Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Glycerin, Retinol, Benzyl Alcohol, Fructooligosaccharides (D-beta), Retinyl Palmitate, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Carmine, Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Nitric Acid, Glycolic Acid, Glucosamine HCL (D), Xathan Gum, Carmine

Bare Skin Anti-Aging Tip: Dry Skin

ANTI-AGING TIP OF THE DAY

DRY SKIN

As we age, skin becomes drier.  Actually, "xerosis," the medical name for dry skin, affects only the very outermost layer of the epidermis – the stratum corneum.   Causing the skin to become flaky, itchy, or ‘tight,' discomfort is often the prevailing complaint.  Genetics, disease, lifestyle, and the environment can all cause the skin to become dry.  To correct this, drink one 8-ounce glass of distilled water, with a pinch of salt (for electrolytes), every 1-2 hours that you are awake.  By flushing toxins from the body with liquid that is free of deleterious metals and bacteria, you permit your skin to remain well hydrated.

IMPORTANT:  Seek medical advice if no obvious cause of dry skin can be identified, as the situation may be caused by an underlying medical problem. Dry skin may arise as a direct result of another dermatological problem, for example dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis, however it can also be a sign of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland).  Diabetics should always consult their doctor if they develop signs and symptoms of dry skin (or any other skin complaint), as diabetes can cause serious skin conditions.

The best way to correct dry skin and keep it hydrated is to use the Bare Skin program that includes retinol, found in all of our Bare Skin programs – dry skin, oily skin, wrinkles, sun damage, scars, and acne prone skin.

Bare Skin Care – Caring for Acne Prone Skin

If you have skin prone to acne, consider our Bare Skin Cranberry Fresh Toner.

This toner is a wonderful solution for oily and acne-prone skin ! It contains glycolic acid polymer and salicylic acid in order to exfoliate, refine, and cleanse pores of congested skin.

The ingredients soften the top layer of the epidermis, and the “cellular cement” that holds the corneum cells together will be dissolved. It leaves the skin tight and smooth after use. The cranberry extract and witch hazel have natural anti-bacterial and antiseptic benefits. Normal and mature skin may also enjoy this toner as a stimulating and clarifying alternative to the Bare Skin regular toner. Based on the skin’s needs, it can be used as a spot-treatment, or on the entire face.
